Working on Antler Barrow

A couple of weeks ago I finally registered an LLC, which is something I’ve been considering doing for some time now. I’ve had a lot of ideas for what I want the business to be: art-related, TTRPG-related, mobile apps, enterprise apps, and more. I just wasn’t sure (and still am not entirely sure) what I would want to focus on for a business given my diversity of interests.

Why Antler Barrow?

Since I have a lot of ideas in a lot of different areas I decided explicitly to focus on one thing to start with, but leave the business open to doing different things. That’s why I selected the name Antler Barrow for the business. It’s non-descript enough that I can do anything with it: art gallery, software consulting, mobile app development, TTRPG publishing… Anything goes really.

The way I selected the name was also pretty random. I created two lists of 100 words, the first list was good for the start of a name, the second list was good for the end of a name. Then I rolled dice until I came up with something I liked. Thus, Antler Barrow.

There are (obviously) a couple different interpretations to this. “Is it like a wheelbarrow made out of antlers?” No, that wasn’t the intent, but I’m not offended by the idea. It’s more based on barrow in terms of ancient burial mounds. Think like a Stone Age or Bronze Age burial mound with an antler commemorating or marking its importance. Macabre? Maybe, but that’s not the idea either, because there’s really no idea behind it. It’s literally two words I put together using random dice rolls that I thought sounded cool.

What am I working on?

Antler Barrow’s first product is going to be an expense tracker mobile app. Very original, I know, but the point is that I want to lob as many products out into the world as possible as quickly as possible, so that I can build skill and possibly find a market before narrowing down into a niche that will definitely earn me money. If I do manage to start earning money with some of the shovelware I’m making, then I’ll give that more attention for sure, but for now I’m just working on getting things out there.

Today I’m working on making sure my test coverage is good, and also working on registering with Google AdMob, the Google Play Store, and the Apple App Store so that I can start publishing the app pretty soon, and have some sort of monetization attached to it. If I have time this week I’ll also be adding a subscription option to turn off ads.

Socials and Things

I need to set up socials and a website for Antler Barrow as well, so that should be on the docket for this week too. I’d like to start posting and see if I can start learning and contributing to the whole “build in public” movement. It seems to be good for getting some attention and finding a place in the startup community, so I should leverage it.
